Bioinformatics is a research area where computer science, information technologies and statistical methods are applied to the processing of biological data. Post-genomic technologies are producing huge amounts of biological data, and bioinformatics the key science in the task to make sense of them. The current challenge of the bioscientist is to be able to easily handle all this information. Bioinformatics is a strategic science, which enjoys both short and long term projections, and whose importance can hardly be overestimated.

In bioinformatics, the two main drivers of scientific and technological change of the last half century comes together: molecular biology and computer science. We are within an interdisciplinary activity, where both sciences mutually amplify the potential of new knowledge and technology transfer. Bioinformatics is an inherently transversal activity, applicable to all areas of life sciences. Bioinformatics has a profound impact on fields as diverse as human health, agribusiness, environment, energy, biotechnology and computing. A new generation of resources, goods and services results from the application of these innovative knowledges and technologies.

The rise of bioinformatics has not been followed by the needed number of academic training programs. Bioinformaticians are not growing at the rate they are needed. This is a main reason for the proposal of the MSc in Bioinformatics at the UAB. This master's degree is a strategic project of the UAB within its recognition as Campus of International Excellence whose moto: "Promoting Knowledge and Innovation" encourages specialization, knowledge transfer, diversification and innovative potential.
